Soft soils and foundations

Soft soils — very soft or soft clays, silts, loose organic-rich materials, and other low-strength compressible deposits — cannot safely carry many conventional shallow foundations without excessive settlement or bearing failure. UK ground investigation reports flag them through strength descriptions, undrained shear strength bands where tested, and settlement commentary rather than a single public “soft soil number”.

When this ground condition becomes a design issue

When GI describes soft or very soft strata within the foundation influence depth; when an engineer replaces assumed strip foundations with rafts, piles, or improvement; or when settlement criteria for finishes and drainage cannot be met on shallow foundations alone.

It also arises on floodplain, alluvial, and former marsh settings where soft deposits sit above denser material.

What the ground is doing

Soft soils reduce allowable bearing and increase compressibility. Engineers may specify piled foundations to transfer load to competent strata, rafts that spread load and control differential movement, or — where appropriate — ground improvement ahead of shallow foundations. The choice depends on thickness of the soft layer, loads, settlement limits, and programme — not contractor preference.

Construction on soft ground also changes temporary works: trench stability, working platforms for plant, and formation protection matter. Soft formation that remoulds under trafficking may need blinding, mats, or a stop-and-ask to the designer.

Mainline installs the specified system (driven, bored/CFA, or mini piles; rafts; attendant excavation). We do not select pile lengths or allowable pressures without engineering design.

Working platforms for piling rigs on soft ground are themselves a design item: mats or engineered fill may be required before the first pile. Soft arisings from CFA or bored piles need a disposal plan that does not remould the platform. Where rafts are used, formation protection from weather and trafficking is critical — soft clay can lose strength quickly once exposed.

Programme and cost implications

Compare whole packages (platform + piles + testing + spoil) rather than pile metres alone. Soft-ground programmes also burn cost in waiting for inspections when formation will not pass.
