Made ground and fill

Made ground is material placed by people — demolition arisings, engineered fill, historic landfill, raised platforms, or informal backfill — rather than natural strata left in place. When this ground condition becomes a design issue

When a desk study or walkover flags former industrial, railway, quarry, or landfill use; when trial pits show mixed fill above natural ground; when an engineer moves from assumed strip foundations to rafts or piles because of variable stiffness; or when spoil classification and disposal become as important as the foundation type.

It also appears mid-tender when drawings still show shallow foundations but the GI recommends founding through or below the fill.

What the ground is doing

Made ground is not a single soil type. Engineered fill placed and compacted under control can perform adequately for some shallow foundations; uncontrolled fill, ash, demolition rubble, and organic inclusions usually do not. Thickness may be a thin veneer or several metres. Groundwater can perch on impermeable layers within the fill.
