Collapsible soils

Collapsible soils can appear stable when dry yet undergo sudden volume reduction when wetted under load — a metastable fabric that “collapses” rather than slowly consolidating like soft clay. In UK practice the risk is less ubiquitous than shrinkable clay, but it appears in certain loose fills, some wind-blown or metastable deposits, and materials that laboratory collapse-potential testing flags.

When this ground condition becomes a design issue

When GI or lab testing reports collapse potential; when loose unsaturated fills sit above a rising water table or drainage leak risk; when design prohibits wetting of a sensitive layer; or when Building Control / warranty queries metastable ground.
