Rainwater harvesting and drainage
Rainwater harvesting collects roof water for reuse (typically non-potable uses) and still needs a coherent drainage design: inlets, filtration, tank, overflow, and sometimes a backup supply interface. When this drainage work is specified
When planning or client brief includes a rainwater tank; when drawings show an underground tank with overflow to soakaway or drain; or when landscaping will bury the tank zone and access must be preserved.
It also appears when overflow and silt management are under-detailed and would otherwise flood the tank excavation during first storms.
Planning drawings that show a tank symbol without invert or overflow detail are not install-ready — push for a construction detail before excavating.
What installation typically includes
Typical works: excavate to tank formation, place bedding, install the tank to level, connect inlet and overflow drainage, backfill with specified material, and leave manway access as designed.
Overflow routing is critical — a sealed tank without a safe overflow path is a flood risk. Filters and calm inlets reduce silt load; protect them during dirty construction phases.
Mainline installs the civil elements to design. Pump, UV, and internal distribution remain specialist M&E scope unless included in a wider package.
Label inlet and overflow clearly before backfill so M&E teams do not reverse connections. Leave space and access for filter maintenance as the manufacturer requires. If the overflow ties into a soakaway or attenuation inlet, protect that downstream asset from tank excavation arisings.
Agree commissioning responsibility in writing: civils complete when the tank and drainage are installed to detail; M&E complete when pumps and controls are proven. Ambiguous handover creates defects disputes.
