Driveway on a slope
Driveways on sloping ground need more than a thinner wedge of Type 1 at the top end. Levels, falls, retention, drainage, and sometimes stepped platforms determine whether cars can stop safely and whether water runs under the house or onto the highway.

When driveway groundworks need proper preparation
When the natural ground rises or falls along or across the proposed driveway; when a garage sits well above or below road level; or when an existing sloping drive has eroded, slipped, or ponds at the low point.
It also appears when planning conditions require on-plot turning that forces a larger platform on a hillside garden.
What the build-up usually includes
Work starts with a level survey and agreement on finished gradients that vehicles can use in wet weather. Excavation may cut into the bank and fill the low side, with compacted fill placed in layers — not dumped soft arisings. Where height difference needs a retaining edge, mass concrete, timber sleepers (where appropriate), or engineered retaining walls appear on the detail.
Drainage must intercept runoff from higher ground so it does not saturate the sub-base. Channels, gullies, and cut-off drains are common. Surfacing choice must suit the gradient; some resin and gravel finishes behave poorly on steeper slopes.
Mainline constructs the groundworks and simple retaining edges to design. We escalate if cut faces look unstable or if the client’s desired gradient exceeds what safe access and the surface product allow.
Frost and leaf mulch on sloping drives reduce traction. Groundworks cannot change physics, but they can avoid polished binder planes that become skating rinks — texture and gradient decisions belong with the surface designer, informed by the levels we set. Provide a hose-test mindset: where would a winter downpour run? Document hold points for formation inspection before covering where Building Control or the client’s surveyor requires photographic evidence of depth and membrane — cheap insurance on disputed domestic jobs.

Retaining structures, imported fill, extra spoil from cutting, and drainage interceptors dominate sloping-drive cost. Access for plant on gradients adds time. Rate intent: costs hub. Underestimating retention is the usual budget shock. Imported engineered fill for the low side is often unavoidable when arisings are unsuitable for structural compaction. Where fill is placed on the low side, compact in thin layers up the slope rather than tipping thick uncompacted wedges that slip after rain.
