Driveway frost resistance

Frost heave and freeze–thaw damage ruin driveways when water sits in the build-up or the sub-base is too thin over frost-susceptible soils. UK winters do not need extreme alpine cold to lift poorly drained domestic hardstandings — repeated freeze cycles on saturated Type 1 or silty formation are enough.

When driveway groundworks need proper preparation

When rebuilding a driveway that has heaved or cracked after cold snaps; when constructing new hardstanding on clay or silty ground; or when a client in a frost-prone hollow wants a base that will not fail every March.

What the build-up usually includes

Frost resistance in driveways is mostly water management plus sufficient non-frost-susceptible granular thickness above vulnerable formation. Compact Type 1 in layers to the agreed depth, maintain falls to gullies or permeable paths, and avoid trapping water against thresholds. Membrane helps keep silty fines out of the stone.

Standing water on impermeable surfaces that cannot escape will freeze at the surface and in joints; drainage design matters as much as millimetres of stone. On very frost-susceptible formations, the designer may require deeper excavation and replace with clean granular material.

Do not confuse driveway build-up with house foundation frost protection depths (often discussed around 450 mm baselines for structures). Different problem, different rules.
