French drains and land drainage
French drains and land drains intercept groundwater or surface seepage and lead it to a designed outfall. They are common behind retaining walls, along cuttings, at the toe of slopes, and around buildings where waterlogging would damage formation or finishes.

When this drainage work is specified
When drawings show a land drain or filter drain; when retaining walls need weep collection; when a waterlogged formation threatens foundations or paving; or when temporary works need a controlled path for seepage during construction.
It also appears when clay sites hold water against structures and a simple soakaway will not address lateral groundwater flow.
What installation typically includes
Typical construction excavates a trench to design depth and fall, places geotextile where specified, installs perforated pipe in a granular surround (or a granular trench without pipe where designed), and connects to a chamber, soakaway, or other outfall.
Filter media grading matters: using the wrong aggregate or wrapping that clogs early defeats the drain. Outfall level must be lower than the drained zone — a French drain without somewhere for water to go is only a wet trench.
Coordinate with retaining-wall drainage details so weep holes and land drains work as one system.
Where land drains run near trees, root barriers or route adjustments may appear on the design — do not cut major roots on improvisation. Flush the pipe after install if the detail allows, so construction fines are not left sitting in the first low point waiting to block flow.

Install to detail, keep silt out of the filter media during works, and record route and outfall for maintenance. Escalate if groundwater volumes exceed what temporary pumps can handle.
Record the land-drain route on as-builts even when it feels “only temporary” — many land drains remain in service for the life of the retaining structure.
What drives complexity on site
