Driveway sub-base depth

Sub-base depth is one of the first questions on any driveway rebuild: how much compacted Type 1 (or equivalent) sits under the wearing course. Depth is not a fashion choice — it is a response to traffic, ground strength, frost risk, and the surface type above.

When driveway groundworks need proper preparation

When quoting a new driveway, diagnosing rutting on an existing thin hardstanding, or coordinating with a surfacing contractor who needs a stated formation level. It also appears when garage thresholds and DPC clearances constrain how deep you can dig without altering finished levels.

What the build-up usually includes

Indicative practice often discusses around 100–150 mm of well-compacted Type 1 for light domestic car use on competent formation, with greater depths — frequently talked about in the 150–200 mm+ region — where ground is soft, frost risk is higher, or occasional delivery vehicles load the surface. These bands are conversation starters, not statutory minima for every site.

Depth only works if compaction happens in layers. Tipping 200 mm loose and driving over it once is not a sub-base. Membrane over subsoil, correct moisture for compaction, and edge restraint so the stone cannot spread laterally all support the depth decision.

Where formation is very soft, the designer may require excavation and replace, geotextile reinforcement, or a different foundation strategy for the hardstanding — not merely “add another 50 mm of stone”.

Surfacing thickness must be deducted when setting dig levels: a resin or block build-up that needs 50–80 mm above sub-base will change excavation if thresholds are fixed. Coordinate early with the surfacing contractor so “depth of Type 1” and “finished level” are not argued after the dig is closed.
